Plastic food containers are full of harmful chemicals. Plastics are made from refined crude oil and contain chemicals such as BPA (Bisphenol-A), which act mainly as plasticizers to make plastic more durable and flexible. Although this makes plastic practical for everyday use, it poses a significant risk to health, especially when it comes in contact with food.
When plastic containers are used for storage or heating, chemicals from the containers can get into the food. Studies have shown that high doses of BPA cause a number of serious health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and liver damage. To (supposedly) solve this problem, companies have started to produce plastic that is labelled "BPA-free". In these products BPA is replaced by other chemicals, BPS (Bisphenol-S) and phthalates such as diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). In many cases, however, the health risks remain. In particular, the chemicals in BPA act in a similar way to oestrogen and can, in the long term, have a lasting effect on women's hormone balance and have a negative impact on reproduction. Research has linked BPA to breast cancer in animals, along with obesity, thyroid problems and neurological disorders in humans. Contact with high concentrations of phthalates and BPA during pregnancy causes lung problems in children, which often lead to chronic asthma later on. Increased insulin resistance and increased blood pressure can also be measured in children.
